How to Become an SEO Expert

01. Read about the basic SEO concepts

Use free, reputable sites to read about what search engine optimisation is. At this stage, the idea is to understand what SEO is and why almost every business can benefit from SEO services. Google’s own documentation is a good starting point. Don’t try to learn everything at once, just get comfortable with the terminology and how search engines think.

02. Take courses / read guides

Start with basic but good, reputable guides such as Moz Beginner’s Guide. Google also has free info worth going through early on. Come back to these as you progress, they’ll make more sense once you’ve had some hands-on time.

03. Put theory into practice

Build and rank your own portfolio site. This is by far the best way to learn SEO. You will also learn basic CMS operation. Pick a niche you actually care about or you won’t stick with it. The mistakes you make on your own site will teach you more than any guide.

04. Offer free SEO services to build your portfolio

Once your own site is showing results, help small local businesses or people you know for free. You’ll hit real problems that a personal project won’t prepare you for. Document everything: rankings before and after, traffic changes, what you did. Those case studies are what you show paying clients.

05. Start pitching paid projects

Once you have results behind you, reach out to businesses or list yourself on freelance platforms. Don’t undersell yourself. Start small, deliver, get testimonials, and build from there.

Things to Avoid

Avoid university or college SEO courses. Too expensive, too long, and half of what you learn is outdated by the time you finish. Most are taught by people who rarely have real-world experience.
Avoid paid courses from “gurus.” If someone spends more time teaching and speaking at conferences than actually doing SEO, that’s your answer. They talk the talk but rarely walk the walk.
